What a curious set of matches in Group E. Japan caused an upset by beating Germany in their round 1 match. Japan then lost to Costa Rica 1-0 in their second round match who had been pumped by Spain 7-0 in their first round match. Germany & Spain played out a 1-1 draw in their round two match.
Germany currently sit last in their group on one point but still have a chance of progressing further depending on results in the last round of matches in their group. Spain is the only team in the group guaranteed of progressing further.

Irrespective of who wins this World Cup it will always be remembered as the World Cup of Controversy and a permanent stain on the game which is administered by grubs.

Netherlands win 2-0 & seals Qatar's fate as the first World Cup host to lose all three matches before exit. Many fans may say good riddance. Maybe money can't buy everything.

Groups A & B have now completed their three group matches. In Group A both the Netherlands & Senegal will progress to the final 16 teams. In Group B both England & the USA wil progress to the final 16 teams. The other Groups still have one match to play but France in Group D, Brazil in Group G & Portugal in Group H have already qualified to progress further. This leaves another nine spots to be filled in the make up of the final 16 teams. Could Australia be lucky enough to fill one of those spots ?

Whilst I wish and am very hopeful that our team can grab a draw or win against Denmark, with Denmark ranked 9th in the world knowing nothing but a win will see them exit the tournament, this challenge will be a massive task for our team to even draw in my humble opinion.

Hmm.....my sentiments exactly. Hopeful of a good outcome for the Socceroos but not overly confident. At least we are still in with a chance at this stage of the competition.

Our lads have done their country proud, two wins and two clean sheets is a massive result against quality opposition.
Through to the knock out rounds for only our second time in history.
Well done to our Socceroos!

How good was that !! An absolutely brilliant goal from Leckie. Definitely one he won’t forget. The Socceroos needed to make the most of their chances with just over 30% possession.
The Socceroos have already exceeded most fans expectations. Any further positive result(s) from here on is a bonus.
Do we dare to dream ? The 2022 Socceroos have already equalled the great result of our previous best performance in a World Cup by the legendary 2006 team. Go Socceroos you have already done us proud & hopefully you can do even better.
The Socceroos will face Argentina in their next match. Argentina finished top of their group with two wins, the same results as Australia who finished second in their group. It was fortunate that the Socceroos were not depending on France to beat Tunisia in the final group match.
Hopefully the Socceroos performance in the World Cup will have positive outcomes for soccer back in Australia.

Now that everyone has calmed down & got over the shock of beating Denmark the No 10 ranked team in the world & progressing to the final 16 teams........what are the Socceroos chances of beating Argentina ?
Our first World Cup game was against France which is ranked No 4 in the world. After a bright start, where we scored first & played well for the first third of the game, we ended up going down 4-1. Nothing to be ashamed of against the current World Cup holders.
What are our chances now against Argentina who are ranked above France at No 3 in the world ? Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1 in the first round group matches. Our last two games against Saudi Arabia ended in a 1-0 loss & a 0-0 draw. So the matches were fairly even. Can we do what Saudi Arabia did & cause a major upset ?

Germany out of the World Cup as Japan has a shock win over Spain. Japan finished top of Group E with Spain in second place. Both progress to the next stage. In Group F Morocco finished first with Croatia second & Belgium missed out. So Morocco & Croatia fill two more spots in the final 16 teams. With Brazil already through in Group G & Portugal the same in Group H it only leaves two more spots up for grabs. Switzerland looks like it is in the box seat in Group G to take out second place behind Brazil. Ghana is the same in Group H to take out second spot behind Portugal.

You have to applaud the brilliance of Japan and how they have progressed as a football nation. I believe they launched their J League in the same year as our A League was launched and whilst we only have one division with now 12 teams with no promotion and relegation, Japan has now three National divisions with promotion and relegation.
There players technical ability is top notch and I reckon there are many things to learn from them and improve our system here in Aus.

The European dominance of teams that make up the final 16 in the World Cup has slipped in this tournament.
Italy which is ranked No 6 in the world never even made it to this World Cup. Belgium ranked No 2, Denmark ranked No 10 & Germany ranked No 11 have all bowed out at the group stage.
Are we seeing a change in the relative strengths of teams from different conferences ? Are the top teams from the Asian Conference on the rise ?

This was, at least according to SBS, the first World Cup group stage since 1994 in which no team has won every game. This is also the first tournament where all six inhabited continents are represented in the knockouts, with Australia (Oceania), Japan and South Korea (Asia), Senegal and Morocco (Africa) and the USA (North America) joining the usual host of South Americans and Europeans. Yes, I know the Socceroos are in the AFC, but still: geographically, it works.
