Recent media stories have been highlighting concerns regarding the health & safety aspects of synthetic pitches.
There have been a number of issues discovered revolving around toxic chemicals used in the production of synthetic turf & the health, environmental & ecological impacts this can have.
The fact also that synthetic pitches are not an all weather surface as they are proclaimed to be. On hot days the surface temperature can rise considerably & are unplayable. Less of a problem for winter sports but with climate change occurring it may be an increasing concern.
Players also complain about " carpet burn" type injuries received from playing on these types of surfaces which they would not receive on normal grass pitches.
Should councils be taking a more cautious approach & research these potential peoblems before expanding the use of synthetic pitches even further?

They won’t - synthetic pitches can be used more heavily than grass.
If we stick to grass, we need more fields.
If we need more fields, it’s less housing and developer profits.
It’s not in the interest of the council. Health is someone else’s problem mate.

It is similar to all products you can obtain, there is the cheap rubbish that comes with issues, there is medium quality and then there is the high end high quality product.
The City of Sydney, east and north have put in many high quality synthetic pitches as there is no spare land left and the population continues to grow as does demand for fields. These synthetic pitches are environmentally sound and not toxic from what i understand.
Then if you look at synthetic pitches closer to home, Lily's is a good high quality surface, Bernie Mullane is very ordinary and assume was a cost reduction choice and you have the burning, grazing issues with healing seeming to take ages and then there is Hills Grammar which have put in an environmentally friendly synthetic pitch and they have invested wisely in my opinion and that field does not seem to get as hot, it has softness under foot and you don't end up losing skin when falling over.
Like everything, technology will continuously improve and with the lack of available land that can be used for fields, synthetic fields have to be the way of the future to meet the demand.
